BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed optimism that a significant opportunity for the reconstruction of Bangladesh has emerged following the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Speaking at an event on Saturday at the National Press Club in Dhaka, he urged everyone to unite and make the most of this chance.
The event was organized to honor late journalist Mahfuz Ullah, who was posthumously awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak.
Mirza Fakhrul used the occasion to reflect on the current political situation in the country.
In his speech, Fakhrul said, “We are all extremely hopeful today. That era of fascism has come to an end. Fascism has fled, and it did so through a movement driven by the people. Now, we all can see a glimmer of hope that we will rebuild Bangladesh anew."
He went on to highlight Mahfuz Ullah`s dedication to democracy, saying that the late journalist always stood for democratic ideals and had a vision of a prosperous and happy Bangladesh.
However, Fakhrul lamented that Mahfuz Ullah’s dream remains only partially fulfilled.
During the event, several other speakers also addressed the crowd, underscoring how the long battle against fascism finally culminated in the student and public movement that led to Sheikh Hasina’s fall.
BNP leaders voiced their hope that the country’s people are now eagerly waiting for a free and fair election that will fully restore democracy in Bangladesh.
With the end of the previous regime, they believe, Bangladesh is at a pivotal moment in its history, and the nation is poised to seize the opportunity for meaningful change.
